Robberies at Fordham —Scott, the constable of Fordham, brought to the bar, a man of the name of Daniel Murrells, whom he charged with a great variety of thefts. Murrells being suspected, a search was made, when Scott found in his house, some things belonging to himself, and several other things which were claimed by the neighbours. Among these were several pieces of wood belonging to James King; an iron mattock of Pudney's; and vermin trap of Scott's. —Mr. Green, a respectable farmer, stated that about Christmas he had twenty-five fowls; he had now only 6; and he had good grounds for suspecting Murrells as the thief.—At this stage of the proceedings, the constable and parishioners brought forward a boy, 14 years of age, to whom Murrells was step-father—who stated that he had accompanied the prisoner on one occasion to Mr. Green's farm yard, who having mounted the tumbrel, took down three of Mr. Green's fowls from the roost by the wings and neck, and handed them down to the witness; they took them home and eat them. The boy proceeded to state that some time ago, he accompanied Murrells to Colchester, when the latter took a gentleman's great coat from gig at the Cups Hotel, and pawned it for 10s. This last case being left for the investigation and judgment of the Borough Magistrates, Murrells was asked what he  had to say to the former charges, when he denied having stolen the mattock, stating that he found it; but admitted the theft of the fowls.—Other charges being now offered against the prisoner, he was remanded for further examination.   Essex Standard, 5 May 1832.
