Convict Notes

Old Bailey online 13/1/1825 189. JACOB MYERS was indicted for stealing, on the 8th of January , a great coat, value 20 s. , the goods of William Watson . WILLIAM WATSON. On the 8th of January, between five and six o'clock in the evening, I was in Mr. Johnson's shop, at Aldgate - my great coat was in my cart, and seeing somebody on the shafts I ran out, and saw a man running with my coat; I called Stop thief! and he dropped it - I picked it up. The prisoner was brought back, but I cannot speak to him. WILLIAM RILEY . I am an officer. On this evening, between five and six o'clock, I was going toward Petticoat-lane, and saw two men - I watched them; the prisoner was on the opposite side - one of them went and spoke to him: he then got on the shaft, and ran off with this coat - he dropped it, and I secured him without losing sight of him. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. I was crossing the road, and ran to avoid a coach - a man ran from the cart, and dropped the coat; I picked it up. GUILTY . Aged 15. Confined Three Months . 19/5/1825 924. JACOB MYERS was indicted for that he, on the 24th of April , at St. Botolph without, Bishopsgate-street , in and upon John Jackson feloniously did make an assault, and put him in bodily fear and danger of his life, and a watch, value 30 s.; a watch chain, value 1 s.; two seals, value 1 s., and three watch keys, value 9 d., his goods, from his person and against his will violently and feloniously did steal . JOHN JACKSON. I am seventeen years old, and live in Widegate-street, Bishopsgate. On Sunday, the 24th of April, about nine o'clock in the evening, I knocked at my master's door, Mr. Field's, in Widegate-street ; he is a dyer, and keeps a sheep's-head shop; the landlady came down and asked who was there? I answered; and after the door was opened two persons came and pushed me into the passage - the landlady had gone up stairs - the prisoner held me while the other took my watch from my fob and ran off with it; I tried to go after him, but the prisoner still held me to prevent my pursuing; I saw the other turn the corner of Sandy-street, and when he had got away I held the prisoner, and cried out Stop thief! a milk-man came and helped me to take him to the watch-house; he never got out of my hold. I charged him at the watch-house with assisting the man in robbing me of my watch - the milkman was not present when the watch was taken; I never let go of the prisoner, and am certain he is the man who held me - it was a silver hunting watch, worth 30 s., and had a chain and keys, attached to it. I have never found it. JOHN GREEN . I am a ward officer of Bishopsgate. I got to the watch-house about two minutes after the prisoner had been brought in. The prosecutor stated the case in rather stronger terms than he has now - I do not recollect that the prisoner denied it, but there was a confusion with the people about. Prisoner. I throw myself entirely on the protection of your Lordship. GUILTY - DEATH . Aged 15.
