On first arrival, for the two years from Nov 1822 until January 1825, John Neville was Gov Serv to John Ryan of Evan before being transferred to McHenry: • Nov 1822 On list of convicts landed from the 'Mangles' and forwarded to Evan for distribution. • From Nov 1822 to Jan 1825 –Government servant employed by John Ryan of Evan; (On Ryan’s return of gov servants employed by him from Nov 1822 to Jan 1825.) • On 18 Jan 1825Transferred in the District of Evan from John Ryan to John McHenry. (Col Sec papers). • From January 1825 - On return of Government servants employed & maintained by John McHenry of Penrith, from Jan 1825. ************* Other Irishmen found guilty at the 1822 Rathkeale Sessions and also transported on Mangles (2) with John Neville were: Michael Neill, Patrick Lysaght, John Hickey, Thomas Driscoll, and James Roche, (all five for being out of home after hours, like Neville), John Collins for serving a threatening notice; and David Donovan, and William Nix.

John Neville arrived on ship "Mangles" in December 1822 aged 20, occupation: ploughman; was 5ft 7 inches tall, with light brown hair, blue eyes, pale complexion, born at Co. Limerick (from ship’s Indent) and was tried at a Special Session at Rathkeale in Co Limerick in March 1822. Sentence 7 years. He had been found out and about in Newbridge, outside the specified proclaimed hours. Special Sessions were held solely to try prisoners under the Insurrection Act of 1820. The Insurrection Act could be proclaimed to be in force in a County where the local Justices of the Peace considered their County to be in a state of disturbance, or in danger of becoming so. ‘Disturbance’ covered such activities of the local people as swearing false oaths, threatening evictions, attacking homes (“assaulting habitations”), attacking stock such as houghing cattle, holding night meetings of secret societies which planned and ordered these activities, etc. Freemans Journal, 12 March 1822, p.3 “RATHKEALE Special Sessions "Friday March 8 (fourth day) "John Neville, a young smart fellow, who had been in Limerick the preceding evening, when a relative was transported. He exhibited a riotous disorderly spirit in Newbridge, after the specified proclaimed hours. – Transportation." His relative on whom transportation had been imposed mayy have been one of the prisoners found guilty on the second day: of the Rathkeale Sessions, being as follows: Freemans Journal (Ireland), 12 March 1822, page 4 – "The following prisoners were then ordered by the court to be put forward for sentence: James Roche, Michael Neale/Neill, William Nix, John Hickey and Thomas Driscoll.” … (the Judge said) .. “I call upon the magistrates to stand to their posts and to discharge their duty with firmness and vigour.” … “Mr Sheriff, you have the cars in readiness to take the prisoners forthwith to be transported?” – “I have My Lord.” • Convict Muster, 1825, Sep. Gov. servant to J. Ryan at Castlereagh & Evan. • Census 1828, John “Nevle’ aged 24 years, Catholic per Mangles, 7 years. Gov Servant as stockman to John McHenry at Bruer [?]River. John McHenry’s property was at Penrith. He had come free from Ireland in 1820 and was given a 100 acre land grant at Penrith in 1823. In Dec 1828 he bought the 1300 acre ‘Lambridge” at Penrith on the western road, from Mr N Chapman. He also bought part of Daniel Woodriff’s early 1000 acre grant on the Nepean River at Penrith. • 1829 - John Neville got his Certificate of Freedom dated 20 May 1829, No. 29/0470.
