National Archives - Medical Journal by Thomas Logan, Surgeon of Convict Ship Proteus, 6 April - 8 Aug 1831. ADM 101/62/2/3 Jeremiah New, aged 16; sick or hurt, cynanche ton[sil]; put on sick list, 28 June 1831. Discharged 3 July 1831 cured.
HO 17/54/94. 1831 Jan 25. Record held at The National Archives, Kew. England Prisoner name: Jeremiah New, John Thorne, David Gee and Worthy Gee. Prisoner occupation: All road menders. Worthy Gee formerly a ploughboy in 1828. Court and date of trial: Wells Special Assize, December 1830. Crime: Robbery [during a riotous assembly] on 22 November 1830. Initial sentence: (All) Death, commuted to seven years transportation. Petitioner(s): Lord Radnor. Grounds for clemency: Previous good character. Other papers: Letter of character from James Spicer, fellow parishioner known to the four convicts. Letter of character on behalf of Worthy Gee from John Johnson, former employer, of Little Hinton, Wiltshire. Additional Information: The convicts had been working on the roads for the parish on pay of 3/- per week.
