William Newey was an exile. Commenced 10 yr sentence at Millbank Prison for felony, stealing . Was a brickmaker but in prison taught trade of tailoring. Served 18 months at Millbank then given a Warrant of Pardon on 10 Jun 1846, signed by Queen Victoria then sent to Australia on "Maitland". arrived Port Phillip 9 Nov 1846. "Leicester Journal 6th December 1844 William Newey, aged 22, pleaded guilty to a charge of burglariously entering the house of John Deacon on the 30th October last, and stealing therefrom two half crowns, three shillings, and two sixpences, the property of the said John Deacon. The prisoner was sentenced to ten years transportation. Leicester Mercury 7th December 1844 Leicester Assizes, before Mr. Justice Patterson, Thursday 5th December William Newey age 22 is charged with breaking into the house of Mr. John Deacon at the Russell Tavern, Rutland St, Leicester on the 30th October last and stealing nine shillings the property of Mr. Deacon. Sentenced to ten years transportation. William had previously been convicted for assault on 14th October 1844. Prison Register Pentonville: Age - 22 years Weight - 9 stone and 4 pounds Marital Status - Single but had one illegitimate child Trade - Brickmaker Status of parents - Father dead, mother reputable Reading and Writing - Imperfect Behaviour - Good character in prison.




William married a girl named Ellen Fitsgerald , went went to the gold fields of Victoria




Came to Australia on the convict ship the "Maitland". Had been a Tailor in England, gaoled for drunkeness. When he reached Australia he became a Bricklayer- quite a change in occupation.
