Nottingham Review and General Advertiser for the Midland Counties Nottinghamshire, England 26 Jun 1840 ELIZA NEWTON was indicted for stealing on the 28th of March last, from the person of Mary Perkins, 15s. 6d., a purse, and two penknives, the property of Geo. Perkins.___It appeared from the evidence of Mary Perkins, that about the end of March last she purchased a knife from Zadock John, a Jew, and on the 28th of March she received from her husband, 15s. 6d. and put all into her purse, which she put into her pocket, where they were when she went to an auction on the South-parade. Whilst she was there, a rush of persons took place near her, and immediatley afterwards she missed her purse. The knife being produced by Wilkinson, the constable, was identified by witness.___Samuel Wilkinson, took the prisoner into custody, and amongst other articles found upon the prisoner was the knife produced.__Guilty__Transported for ten years. __________________________ Eliza Newton was listed as 23 years old on arrival. Native Place: Bristol. Surgeons Report: Sly and irregular. Occupations: Servant/plain laundress/cook. Eliza could read, was married, 5'4¾" tall, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, scar on forefinger left hand. 20/5/1844: Permission to marry: Spouse name: William Sweetingham Ship: Arab (2) 1834 Date of marriage 20 May, 1844 (exactly this date) Place of marriage St John's Church of England, New Town, Tasmania 29/1845: TOL 5/1/1848: Eliza (T of L) and a female child under the age of 2 years were living alone in James Street, Launceston. 6/10/1848: Eliza Newton, departures, passenger Launceston to Port Phillip per 'Raven'. Ship to colony: Navarino. (No mention of a child).




Eliza was given permission to marry William Sweetingham 20 May 1844. She was granted a conditional pardon on the 4 July 1848 and believed to have gone to mainland Australia. Record of her death has yet to be found, although her husband, William, remarried in August 1858 so it's reasonable to assume she died beforehand.
