Born 8 Oct 1810, Douglas, Isle of Man, England. He and his wife Hannah Bowstead ran the Cock & Crown Public House in Little Britain, Aldersgate, London, England. Alexander's correct name was Alexander Francis Ballie Nicholson. His name on the index seems to be split in two with two entries. One Alexander Francis the other Ballie Nicholson, they are one person. He was a Postman working in a Post Office when he was seen putting envelopes with money in his pocket. He was arrested and convicted of stealing and sentenced to transportation for life. He didn't need to steal, Alexander came from a wealthy family in Whitehaven and they had the income from the Pub. His wife and his in -laws stated he had been behaving very oddly in the years beforehand, trying to take his own life and behaving very strange up to the point where Hannah had to give the pub up, she stated in his trial. Alex came on the Emily Convict Ship on 24th of June 1842 among 240 other passengers and arrived in Van Diemen's Land 24th of November 1842. One can only imagine the horrors of that trip!
