Convict Notes

Mary's daughter, Margaret Butler was also convicted of arson (Tipperary, 20 July 1849) and transported on the Earl Grey (dep IRL 17 Dec 1849) to Van Diemen's Land (arv 9 May 1850).

Mary was sentenced as a 60 year old widow, the second oldest woman to be transported for arson and the oldest to have stated she did with the goal of transport: "to follow my daughter". Mary was admitted to the New Norfolk Asylum in Van Diemen's Land for "amentia" in January 1858 and remained there 15years until her death at 1:20pm on 19 September 1872. According to her death certificate Mary die of 'natural decay' and she is described as a "75-year-old pauper". If her age of 60 is correct at trial, she would have been aged ~82 years at death and would've been born in about 1790.

Mary was a widow, four foot nine inches tall, with grey hair and fair complexion. She had no previous convictions. She was convicted on March 12 and received at Grangegorman on June 13.
