Convict Notes

Hannah married George Green (arrived on the Indefatigable 1812) in 1832 in Tasmania. George died in 1841 and the property that he had was to go to his brother Robert back in England but Hannah was swindled out of the property. It all came to light after the death of Mrs Green and George Sturgeon's murder, when Elizabeth the wife of George's brother Robert discovered she did not own the land that she thought she had inherited. The courts demanded it was handed back to the Green family who lived in England. They demanded it be sold, and it was purchased by George Latham, who married Elizabeth (Barwick) Sturgeon so she was not evicted fom her home. Altogether a convoluted story, reflecting the convoluted macninations of the Ecclesiastical Courts, with shades of Dickens' Bleak House. Latham leased it out and took off to New Zealand.
