Surrey Sessions, July 25. Thomas Norris, an old offender, was tried upon an indictment charging him with having stolen nine pounds of bacon, the property of Ann Curry. The prosecutrix, who keeps a chandler's shop in the Borough, missed the bacon on the 20th of May, and hearing that a man had been apprehended upon suspicion of theft, applied for information, and found her bacon upon his upon his person. She swore to the article from the odd cut of it. The prisoner said he was walking on the Dover road, and while looking up to see if it would rain, he happened to kick something before him which was wrapped up in a nice clean napkin; He threw the napkin away, but kept the bacon. The Jury returned returned a verdict of Guilty. The CHAIRMAN—From considerations of humanity to you, as well as to the community, I will send you out of the country. He was sentenced to seven years transportation. London Chronicle, 28 July 1817.
