William Norris was convicted at the CCC, London 17 Aug 1840 for stealing a coat. Aged 13 yrs.(William Brown also appeared on the same charge, convicted & transported.) 7yr transportation sentence. First sent to Parkhurst Prison for Boys on Isle of Wight (3 1/2yrs) then transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Mandarin' arriving 16 Oct 1843. Bricklayer and shoemaker; Protestant; 19yrs (which more accurately should have been 16); can read & write a little. Native place - Shoreditch, London. 1 yr Probationary period at Brown River, VDL. Several records of misconduct and further offences. Free by Servitude Aug 1847 Discharged from Prison Barracks, Hobart. Certificate of Freedom Aug 1847.
