Ann NORTON was convicted at Maidstone QS, Kent, England on 2 July 1846 for stealing boots and shoes. Previous conviction. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Elizabeth & Henry' arriving 4 Jan 1847. Ship surgeon's report: "of weak intellect". Aged 30 yrs; married, a widow, 2 children; needlewoman/dressmaker, imperfect; 5'0 1/2" height; Church of England; can read; sallow complexion; dk brown hair; grey eyes. Stated her children live with her sister and husband, Wm Barton at Gravesend. Native place of birth: Tonbridge, Kent. Colony of VDL: 6 mths probation period. Clear Conduct Record. DEATH: Ann NORTON died in the October of 1847, the same year she arrived. Record of her burial at the Grounds of Prison Barracks, Hobart on 31 Oct 1847. She is recorded as 29 yrs of age, Protestant, Bond, per ship 'Elizabeth & Henry'. No cause of death stated. (ref. 34/1/2 no. 1630)
