Convict Notes

Elizabeth was a single woman of Liverpool, and had been born at Chester. She had stolen from Mary Duffer and was convicted at Wigan in January 1813. In New South Wales, Elizabeth was to be found in the female factory in 1816. She was then assigned as a servant to a Mrs Rutter. She was given permission to marry free man John Roberts in August 1817 at St Johns, Parramatta and signed her own name on the marriage certificate. Elizabeth was free by 1820, living with her husband in Sydney and in 1822 and 1825, she was 'wife of John Roberts at Parramatta'. Elizabeth received her certificate of freedom in February 1824 and at that time was described as being 5ft tall with a sallow complexion, dark eyes and brown hair. Elizabeth passed away on the 8th May 1840 and was buried the following day at St Lukes, Sydney.
