Petition for mitigation of sentence (Fiche 3180; 4/1852 p.261) ------------------------------------------------- Petition of James Nottley. That petitioner arrived in the Colony in the Transport ship Indian in the year 1810, under the sentence of Transportation for That Petitioner since his arrival has lived as Government Servant with John Bootle of Pitt Town now nearly seven years and has during such servitude meritted the approbation of his master and he therefore humbly hopes that his good conduct will induce Your Excellency to take into your humane consideration the severe sentence under which he labours and will graciously pleased to grant him some mitigation thereof. -------------------------------------------------- NSW Convict Index. Thursday se'nnight James Notley and Thos. Deed were committed to Bury gaol, by the Rev. Wilson, charged with stealing one sheep, the property of Mr Joseph Arthy, ... Ipswich Journal, 4 July 1807. ... which terminated on Saturday evening, the following prisoners were tried: James Notley, capitally convicted of dealing one sheep, the property of Mr. Joseph Arthy, of Dalham, received sentence of death, and was left for execution. Norfolk Chronicle, 1 Aug 1807. A reprieve has been received at our gaol for James Notley, sentenced to be executed here this day, for sheep stealing. Bury and Norwich Post, 12 Aug 1807. -------------------------------------------------- Hulk Reports HO-9-8_3 at Portsmouth. Received from Bury St Edmunds, 24 Sept 1807 James Notley, age 30, Sheep Stg, Tried 23 July 1807 at Bury St Edmunds, NSW. Life, Sent on board ye Indian, 27 June 1810.
