Convict Notes
ADM 101/254/1C Medical journal of the Duchess of Northumberland, convict ship from 16 November 1852 to 27 April 1853 by Charles Smith, Surgeon Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in the convict service. Folios 7-8: case no 5, Jane Nottingham, aged 29, Convict; taken ill in the Bay of Biscay; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, this woman led a most dissipated and wandering life and had been in 24 different prisons for various misdemeanors, she was also of a violently and intractable disposition and appeared to be at times partially insane, was subject to copious discharges from the vagina of a muco-sanguineous character and often suffered from dyspeptic attacks and irregularity of bowels; put on sick list 15 January 1853, died 13 February 1853.
Jane NOTTINGHAM was convicted at Salop, Shrewsbury, England on 17 March 1852. 15 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Duchess of Northumberland', departing 27 Nov 1852. Jane died, at sea, during the voyage on 14 Feb 1853. Death ref - convict records, Tasmania.
