Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

Name; Elizabeth Nowlan aged 2 months old taken ill the 6 March 1848 and discharged well 10 same month Disease; Convulsions Surgeons Notes; 'Unusually large frame and born on bord the ship the 25 January 1848, the first night sailing from Kingston, the labour being natural and terminating after about half a dozen moderately severe pains a remarkably fine child and apparently healthy, continued to improve, the mother having an abundance of milk till the morning of the 6 March when called to attend and found it suffering with strong convulsions.....
