Convict Notes

Disgraceful Case. Ann Nugent, a prisoner of the crown, assigned to one Alexander Burke, appeared to make the following complaint against him: on being sworn, she deposed that some months back, she was assigned to Burke, from the factory. On arriving at his house, he bargained, in consideration for ten shillings, which she then gave him, to let her go upon her own hands. She did so; and, having procured a situation, remained at large for six or seven weeks; when, being unable to satisfy his demand for more money, he caused her to be apprehended, and, on her being brought before the Magistrates, swore that she had absented herself from his service for three days. In consequence of which, she was punished by a months imprisonment in the factory. That period having expired, she was returned, on Saturday last, to his house. When the family retired to rest, he requested her to sleep with a man who lodges with him, and, on her positive refusal to do so, called her a ---- knocked her down, beat her, and kicked her in a brutal manner. Under these circumstances she sought the protection of the Bench, who searched the records and found her statement respecting his former deposition to be true. Burke said the woman was drunk, and, with the most consummate effrontery, produced the very lodger for whom he had pandered. The Bench then closely questioned both the men, the result of which only confirmed what the poor girl had stated. They accordingly reprimanded the master severely for his detestable conduct, ordered the woman to be taken from his service, and directed a recommendation to be forwarded to His Excellency the Governor that no more prisoners may be assigned to Burke. Sydney Gazette, 16 June 1832.

Ann Nugent suffered at the hands of her 'master' Alexander Burke. When Ann was first assigned to Burke, they struck a deal whereby she would pay him 10 shillings, and she could remain at large.Burke wanted more money from Ann and she refused, Burke then reported her as a runaway. She was apprehended as per the list of Runaways apprehended up to 18 Jun. On her release she was returned to Burke who demanded she sleep with a lodger, she reused he beat her. Ann asked the Bench for protection. Source, Police Report, The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser.
