John O'BRIEN was convicted at Glasgow, Scotland on 20 Sept 1848 for house breaking and stealing furniture. 1st conviction. Prison report from Millbank "very bad, disobedient & insolent to the Governor. Struck another prisoner in Chapel. Flogged. 5 reports". 7 yr transportation sentence - sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Lady Kennaway' arriving 28 May 1851. Ship Surgeon's Report: "fair". Single man; aged 20 yrs; can read & write a little; Roman Catholic; labourer; 5'1 1 /4" height; sallow complexion; light brown hair; grey eyes. Native place: Belfast, Ireland. Father: John - at native place Mother: Ann - at native place (ref. for parents, Convict Indent record) Colony of VDL: 22 months Probation Period - on Norfolk Island (under the administration, at that time, of Van Diemen's Land). Several records of misconduct and punishments whilst stationed on Norfolk Island. Transferred to Port Arthur Penal Settlement, VDL in 1853, then to Oyster Cove and the Huon Valley. 8 May 1855: Ticket of Leave granted. 21 Sept 1855: Certificate of Freedom issued.
