John O'BRIEN was convicted at York, England on 10 July 1844 for the manslaughter of Benjamin Gott. Tried with 5 other men. Life Sentence. 1st conviction. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'David Malcolm' arriving 1845 but first stationed at Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales, Australia). Transferred to Van Diemen's Land itself in 1847 per the ship 'Tory'.
