John O'BRYAN (O'BRIEN) was convicted at Dublin City, Ireland on 25 Feb 1845 for stealing candlesticks. 7 yr transportation sentence. Gaol report: "orderly. Twice convicted before". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Ratcliffe' arriving 1845. Ship surgeon's report: "Quiet". Other personal details, such as age and trade are not recorded. (note - there are several John O'Brien's transported to VDL around this time) VDL: 15 mths Probation Period. Station Gang: Nicholls Rivulet. Served at Hobart, Antill Ponds, New Town Farm, Campbell Town, Darlington Maria Island, Cascades, Port Arthur, Ross, Oatlands, Tunbridge & Ross. Several records of misconduct and punishments. 3 May 1852: Free Certificate issued. 4 Sept 1867: at Hobart - stealing 36 lbs weight of lead. 6 mths hard labour.
