Reference Number: t18380514-1251 Offence: Deception > forgery Verdict: Guilty > no_subcategory; Guilty > no_subcategory Punishment: Transportation **This is an edited version – the trial was lengthy and may be seen in full at the Old Bailey website. JOHN CLATER and GEORGE OLLEY were indicted for feloniously uttering a forged transfer of £50, which was jointly possessed in the new 31/4 per Cent. Annuities, by the said John Clater and Robert Thomas Wood, with intent to defraud the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, well knowing it to be forged.—2nd COUNT, with intent to defraud Robert Thomas Wood.—3rd COUNT, with intent to defraud Robert Barker. CLATER— GUILTY . Aged 33. OLLEY— GUILTY . Aged 34. Transported for Life. John Clater arrived in VDL per ‘Layton’ 1839. George Olley was 34 years old when convicted and 35 on arrival. He was 5’1” tall, sallow complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, slightly pockpitted. Married – Wife Harriett Pentonville (or at Pentonville) – 2 children. Feb. 1848: TOL Jan. 1851: Recommended for a CP April 1852: CP approved. 2/4/1882: George died at the New Town Charitable Institution and was buried on the 4/4/1882 at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Paupers section.
