James O'Mara is my Gr/Gr/ Grandfather and was born at Aries, Queens County Ireland in 1811. He was convicted of burgalary in December 1836 and transported to Australia on the 'Heber' and on July 12th 1837 arrived Sydney. He was assigned to Naval Engineer, George Barney and worked on Victoria Barracks & Circular Quay. He obtained his Ticket of Leave in 1845 and married at Juging to Catherine English in 1848. They had 11 children ( i did not survive.) There were 9 males and one of his sons,Michael was my Great Grandfather. 7 of James O'Maras Grand children enlisted in WW1. Owen Cooney O'Mara was killed and 5 of the other 6 were WIA. James & Catherine are buried at Jugiong Cemetery, sadly, in an unmarked grave.

James O'Mara was 26 years old, he was catholic and single. 1845: TOL Yass 1848: Married Catherine English at Yass. Catherine was born 2/9/1831 in County Tipperary, Ireland and died in 1899 at Jugiong, NSW. They had 11 children and mostly lived in the Gundagai/Yass area. 1854: James was in the Yass area 1872: Clerk of the Course at Tumut. 19/7/1876: Auriferous Lease, Southern Gold District. No date of death unfortunately, although he died at Jugiong also.
