The following is an extract from Norfolk & Norwich Chronicle Gazette Saturday 21 March 1818: The following pleading guilty……. John Overton, for breaking into the dwellinghouse of Thomas Cage of South Pickenham, and stealing therefrom a tin box containing 8 guineas in gold, one promissory note of the value of 1/- and other monies and two pairs of stockings his property was capitally convicted. It appeared that the prisoner on the 20 January last when both the prosecutor and his wife were from home availed himself of that opportunity and effected his purpose by knocking out the window. Sentenced to death then commuted to deportation for life. Before transportation he was held on board the prison hulk ship Laurel, the UK Prison Hulk Register reads ‘John Overton, age 30 estimated birth year 1788, date received: 5.6.1818, Ship: Laurel, Place Moored: Portsmouth, Date Convicted: 14.3.1818 at Norfolk.
