Family connections for Hugh (Owens) are: OWENS Hugh (Owens) was born about 1767. He was tried for murder of Robert (Taylor) at Armagh co. Ireland in 1795, sentenced to be hanged respited to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 2 1796 after a voyage of 6months on MARQUIS CORNWALLIS; he was 5'8" swarthy complexion dark brown hair grey eyes thin visage. In 1800 he was employed by James (Williamson), Commissary. In May 1801 he joined NSW Corps. He had a relationship with Rosetta (Warburton her second (2of3) relationship) & later married her. He was a soldier with (McArthur)s company in 1804. He, stated age 32, married (Rosetta (Warburton) on 14 1 1810 (both emancipists) at St Johns CofE Parramatta. On 25 3 1810 he transferred to 73rd Regiment as a private, continuing to 1814; he served in Parramatta from 1810-11. He transferred to Invalid Company on 25 Feb 1814. In 1818 he transferred to 48th Regiment. In 1819 he worked at supplying 30,000 wooden shingles to John (McArthur). In 1823 he may have received a 'conditioned' grant of 100acres at Auburn near Parramatta, which he leased in 1826 to James (Chisholm)-part of the payment going to Hugh’s son James. On 3 5 1825 he was to receive grants of 300acres; & in that year he was recorded as “publican or pensioner” at Parramatta. In 1828 he (as H LorH D) was recorded with Conditional Pardon with his wife & 2sons on 227acres at Wilberforce. In 1833 he was living at Smith Street Parramatta. He died in 1835 age68 at Wilberforce. She was tried at Lancaster Quarter Sessions on 1 5 1797, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 10 7 1798 after a voyage of 6months on BRITANNIA. She had a first relationship (1of3) with Adam (Clink/Crank/Cross).>>> [Some details taken from this Website] Adam (Clink/Crank/Cross) arrived free in 1798 on HUNTER. He settled near Bathurst Reach Upper Hawkesbury. On 4 9 1822 he was assaulted & robbed by 3convicts who had escaped Port Macquarie prison & took salt pork, meal, sugar, tea, clothing, knives, a compass and the shoes off his feet. Rosetta (Warburton) & Adam (Clink/Crank/Cross) produced perhaps 2children: 1.Eleanor (Clink/Crank/Cross) was born on 16 7 1799 & baptised on 8 6 1800 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. 1a.Noted a Henry (Crank) is recorded as born in 1801-no parents mentioned. .. Rosetta (Warburton) & Hugh (Owen) produced 7children:] 1.Thomas (Owen) was born on 1 5 1802 & baptised on 3 7 1802 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. In 1828 he was recorded with his parents at Wilberforce. 2.James (Owen) was born on 8 7 1804 & baptised on 29 7 1804 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. In 1826 he received part of the payment for lease of his fathers grant of 100acres at Auburn near Parramatta. In 1828 he was recorded with his parents at Wilberforce. .. 3.Jane (Owen) was born in 1806 & baptised on 28 3 1807 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. 4.Catherine (Owen) was born on 18 12 1809 & baptised on 22 4 1810 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. She married David (Hennessy) emancipist on 4 12 1826 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & produced at least 1child. She is recorded in 1828 as Protestant with her husband & brother Hugh at Parramatta. David (Hennessy) was born about 1796/9 & became a carrier. He was tried for robbery at Cork co. Ireland in April 1817, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 1 4 1818 after a voyage of 4.5months on GUILDFORD; he was Catholic. He was Free by Servitude by 1828 when he was recorded as a tanner with his wife at Parramatta. She is recorded in 1822 as wife of Hugh of the Veteran’s Company at Parramatta; & she was also recorded with her child age1. In 1800, Hugh Owens was recorded as a convict employed by Mr James Williamson, Acting Commissary. In May 1801, Hugh Owen joined the NSW Corps, better known as the "Rum Corps". Registered baptisms of children of Hugh and Rosetta Owens: 1. THOMAS. Born 1 May 1802, baptised 3 July 1802by Rev Samuel Marsden at St John's Anglican Church, Parramatta. (per St John's baptismal Index) 2. JAMES. Born 8 July 1804, baptised 29 July 1804 by Rev Samuel Marsden at St John's Anglican Church, Parramatta. (per St John's baptismal Index) 3. JANE Born 1806, baptised 28 March 1807 by Rev Henry Fulton at St John's Anglican Church, Parramatta. (per St John's baptismal Index) 4. CATHERINE, Born 18 December 1809, baptised 22 April 1810 by Rev Henry Fulton at St John's Anglican Church, Parramatta. (per St John's baptismal Index) In 1826, on 4th December, Catherine, aged only 15 years) married David Hennessy, (an Irish convict from Cork, then FbyS) with the permission of her father, at John's Parramatta (St Jphn's Marriage Register). Neither signed their name. Husband recorded as "INDESS" in NSW BDM (382/1826 V1826382 44B) In the 1828 Census Catherine Hennessy, BC, Protestant, aged 17, lived at Parramatta with her husband David Hennessy, a tanner, Catholic, aged 29, convict per ship 'Guildford" in 1817, now free by servitude. Catherine's 13 y.o. brother Hugh Owen lived with them. 5. HUGH Born 12 Jul 1814, Baptised 14 Aug 1814, by Rev Henry Fulton at St John's Anglican Church, Parramatta. (per St John's baptismal Index). In 1828, Hugh, recorded as being aged 13 years, was residing with his married 17 year old sister, Catherine Hennessy, and her husband, David On 6th February 1804, Hugh and Rosetta were the witnesses at the marriage ceremony of Thomas Bates (Per 'Hillsborough 1798) and Mary Johnstone formerly Mary Katesby arrived per 'Earl Cornwallis' from England in 1800. In 1810, Hugh Owen switched in March 1810 from the NSW Corps to the 73rd Regiment which had been sent when Gov Macquarie took over in NSW. The NSW Corps - the old 102nd, which Hugh had originally joined in 1801 - had been disbanded. Hugh Owens Enlisted in the 73rd on 25 Mar 1810 at the rank of Private, for 7 years. His Duty Began: 1810, and Ended in 1814, His Military Company was 3, 4, 8, 9. His First Place of Duty was Parramatta 1810-1811, He transferred to the Invalid Company, on 25 Feb 1814. [Information per Army Regimental Pay Lists, May 1809 to December 1815, held British National archives, Kew. WO 12/8000, WO 12/8001 & WO 12/8002.] In 1814 Muster, Rosetta was recorded as wife of Hugh of the Veteran's Company, of Parramata. In 1819, Hugh Owen and William Barker supplied 30,000 wooden shingles to John Macarthur at 10/- per 1,000, per Account dated 2 March 1819. ('John Macarthur: Receipted Bills,1816-21!: Macarthur Papers, ML A3001.) Macarthur was undertaking extensive building - cottages at Hambledon and Camden, and renovations to a George St house. In the 1822 Muster, a 1 year old was recorded with Rosetta, as her child. In 1823, Hugh Grant received a "conditioned" grant of 100 acres of land at Parramatta. A condition was that a convict was to be assigned to Owen and clothed and victualled by Owen until expiry or remission of the convict's sentence, and was to be employed solely on the land grant, The description of the land was that It commenced at the the south east corner of Sarah Lury's farm, - Sarah Lury had been granted 50 acres in what is now Auburn, near parramatta. [ Per Index to Registers of NSW Land Grants and Leases]. In the 1825 Muster, Hugh Owen was recorded as "publican or pensioner" Parramatta. In March 1826 the 100 acres was leased to James Chisholm for one year for the sum of £37 to be paid to Hugh and £20 to be paid to Hugh's son, James. On 3 May 1825 Hugh Owen was on the Return of Free Settlers to Receive Land grants (300 acres). In the 1828 Census Hugh and Rosetta, and two sons, James aged 21 and Thomas aged 23, were recorded as living at Wilberforce, Hugh was recorded as H.L. (or perhaps H.D.?) Owen, Conditional Pardon, aged 60, and Rosetta as "R" Owen, aged 45. LANDHOLDER of Wilberforce. 227 acres in total, 10 acres cleared, 6 acres cultivated. One head of cattle. (Per Australian Census, alphabetical return) In 1833 an advertisement for a lost mare referred to the address of "Mr Hugh Owens's', Smith Street, Parramatta". 1835 Death recorded as Hugh "OWENS", "Age 65" NSW BDM 1637/1835 V18351637 19 After her husband's 1835 death, Rosetta Owen remarried, to Samuel Dawes (recorded as "DAW" in 1839 NSWBDM).

Belfast Newsletter, Friday 10 April 1795 p. 2 “AT ARMAGH ASSIZES “The following prisoners were tried: “Hugh Owens found guilty of the murder of Robert Taylor of Tullyard – ordered to be hanged 6th April next, but since respited.” List of Convicts 1792-1796, on Marquis Cornwallis Indent list: Hugh Owens, (age is illegible since ink is too light), tried in County Armagh, in 1795, for term of LIFE. Hugh Owens was 29 years old on arrival and was transported for "the murder of Robert Taylor".
