3/1/1824 Oxford Journal Oxfordshire, England: Edward Payne, the notorious donkey, turkey, rabbit, and sheep stealer, was apprehended and committed by the Rev. E. Hasted yesterday, on a charge for the latter offence. Payne has been tried for different offences at least six times, and has not been discharged from prison for turkey-stealing more than a fortnight! Edward Payne was the son of John Payne, who along with Edward's brothers, Thomas and Richard, arrived on the 'Malabar' in 1819. Also his other brother Stephen Payne arrived on the 'Eliza' in 1822. Edward was listed as 25 years old on arrival - native place: Kent. He was 5'4½" tall, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes. Assigned to Mr A. B. Spark at Evan on arrival. 1837: Aged 33?? Assigned to John Woolridge, Maitland. Married Ann Hanratty (daughter of Patrick Hanratty (Atlas 1802) and Sarah Wilson (Lord Melville 1817). Ann was born 1823 and died 1913 - 14 when she married.
