NSW BDM - Named George Payne, Death 23 July 1861, Registration No.4981/ 1861, aged 70 years, No parents listed, Died in District of Wagga Wagga
Hulk Report, National Archives, HO9-9-2. p.51 Received on hulk from Fisherton Gaol,15 May 1821, with 7 other prisoners, one of whom was William Barnes. George Pain, age 27, convicted at New Sarum quarter Sessions, 1 May 1821, of a felony, sentenced to 7 years. Left hulk for NSW 26 Mar 1822.




Transportation for 7 years – Geo. Pain and Wm Barnes, for stealing about ? lbs of hay, the property of Mr Thomas Waters, at Stratford under the Castle. Salisbury Journal, 10 May 1821




Tried and convicted at the Wiltshire Quarter Sessions on 1st May 1821, sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Left England on 4th April 1822. Ship:- the 'Asia I' sailed with 190 male convicts on board of which 1 died during the voyage. Arrived on 24th July 1822. George had married Sophia Able on 21st November 1818 in Wiltshire, England, they had 2 children, both of whom died along with Sophia in England. George married convict Margaret Irvine ('Elizabeth' 1828) on 29th June 1829 at Sydney, they had no recored children, it is unclear what became of Margaret after that. From the early to mid 1830's he began a relationship with 2 women at what apears to be the same time :- With Eliza Garthwaite (a free settler who arrived on the 'Layton' with her sister in 1833) he had 4 children between 1836-1844. With Mary Ann Jackson (daughter of convicts John Jackson, 'Earl Cornwallis' 1801 & Mary Ann Kershaw, 'Canada' 1810) he fathered 13 children between 1836-1862, (the last one being born after George died in 1861 at Wagga Wagga), he did eventually marry Mary Ann on 18th February 1850 at Campbelltown.
