SUTTOR Some amendments added Nov 2025. George (Suttor son of William & relation (brother?) of William Beverley) was born on 11 6 1774 at Chelsea Middlesex, of strong Scottish descent. He was educated at Macquarie Fields & Kings School. He married Sarah Maria (Dobinson) on 2 8 1798 in London. He arrived in NSW as a botanist with plants for Sir Joseph (Banks) with his wife & child on 5 11 1801 on HMS PORPOISE-the voyage commenced in October 1798 on a ship also named HMS PORPOISE which was nearly wrecked in gale at Margate Sands; in January 1799 they continued to Portsmouth & left there in September 1799, encountered a gale at Bay of Biscay & returned to Spithead Hampshire, the ship damaged beyond repair; they left again on 17 3 1800 on another HMS PORPOISE which was further delayed by 4months at Cape of Good Hope. He settled at Parramatta, then took land at Baulkham Hills for orangery & vineyard, which he named 'Chelsea Farm'. In 1808 (or1800?) he was tried for protesting in a letter supporting Governor (Bligh), against Colonel (Foveaux)s orders, & sentenced to 6months gaol & fine; he later attended a court martial in England, a 2year journey, where his part was vindicated. In February 1822 he moved to Bathurst with some of his family to escape plague of caterpillars at Parramatta; he became a market gardener at 'Brucedale' at junction Winburndale & Clear creeks. He died on 5 5 1859 age about85 at 'Alloway Bank' & buried at CofE Kelso. Sarah Maria (Dobinson) arrived in NSW with her husband & child on 5 11 1801 on HMS PORPOISE, suffering the same perilous journey. She attended the farm & livestock during her husbands absence in England for a trial. In February 1822 she moved to Bathurst with some of her family. After this, William married Francis 'Fanny' Dyer. Fanny was a convict who came to the colony aboard the ship 'Aelous' in 1809. On January 24th 1818, William was granted land at Eastern Creek. He was then living at Richmond. However, On 8th May 1819, William was murdered by Matthew Finnighan who was indicted for the wilful murder at Richmond. He was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to two years imprisonment.




William had a relationship with Sarah Smith (Details unknown). Sarah had 2 children from a previous relationship, William Lee and Maria Lee. After Sarah died in 1804, William Pantony looked after the children and William Smith/Lee accompanied Pantony on the ship 'Buffalo' in 1805 to Port Dalrymple in Van Diemens Land where they stayed for several years. They returned to New South Wales in 1811 and Pantony was given a full pardon.




William was a convict who arrived in the colony on 1 Aug 1791 on the ship 'Matilda'. He was sentenced on 10 Mar 1787 at Huntingdon England for a period of 7 years transportation. He was then sent on to Norfolk Island and arrived there in late 1791.
