Old Bailey 6/4/1796 MICHAEL PARKER was indicted for that he, having been tried and convicted of grand larceny, at the Gaol Delivery of Newgate, holden on Wednesday the 14th of January, 1795, was ordered to be transported beyond the seas, for the term of seven years; and that afterwards, on the 7th of March last, he was found at large, without any lawful cause, before the expiration of the said term .(The case was opened by Mr. Knowlys). JOHN OWEN sworn. Examined by Mr. Knowlys. I am one of the servants of the keeper of Newgate: I know the prisoner; I was present when he received sentence of transportation, (produces Mr. Shelton's certificate of his conviction); I saw Mr. Shelton sign it; (it is read). JOHN NOLAN sworn. I am one of the officers of the Public-office, Whitechapel: I apprehended the prisoner on the 7th of March, in a court that comes into Cable-street, St. George's; I was going along the street, he ran into a house, and I pursued him, and took him; he told me he would not go with me; I am sure he is the man. Prisoner's defence. I went out of this jail on Whitsun-Saturday; I went down with the coach to Gosport; and at Farnham they changed coaches and packages; and I was drinking there along with some ship-mates, and was left behind; they forgot me, and so I came to London. Crime date Found at large March 1796, trial date April 6, 1796, trial held at the Old Bailey, aged 14 at the time. Originally charged with stealing 18 dressed leather skins-called basils, value 1 pound, property of Pillet Kirkham, crime committed on December 29, 1794 and trial held on January 14, 1795, sentenced to 7 years. Then tried on April 6, 1796 for being found at large without lawful cause before expiration of previous 7 year sentence. Found at large on March 7, 1796. Sentenced to death, commuted to life. Bought before the Bench of Magistrates NSW on December 28, 1799 charged with suspicion of breaking and entering.
