Charlotte was a female born in Kingston ST Mary to unmarried Hannah Parsons. In 1824 she was acquitted at the last assize in Taunton, Somerset of Felony On 10 June 1826 Charlotte was committed to Wilton Gaol and described as Height: 4ft 10 inches Complexion: Fresh, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Sandy, Single, Marks: mark of a cut on the right hand, Trade: Labourer, Last Residence: Kingston Charge/Offence: Felony, Removed to the Sessions on July 12. On 25 July 1826 Charlotte was committed to the Assizes charge with stealing a cake of bread the property John Mullins. On 2nd January 1827 Charlotte was recorded in the Register of Wilton Gaol as being 26 years old and able to read and “convicted of larceny M?? Session ?? She was sentenced to 10 months for stealing a quantity of wearing apparel at the Somerset Quarter Sessions held at Wells on Monday 2 January. Later she was convicted at the Somerset Assizes in Bridgewater on 22nd August 1829 and sentenced to transportation for 14 years. Her arrival in Sydney on 29 June 1830 is listed in the Convict Indents. she is number 48 and 38/2112. She was single and Protestant and her occupation is given as diary maid and house maid. Her description was Height: 4 foot 9 and three quarter inches, Complexion: ?? freckled Hair: red, Eyes: hazel and was assigned to Lucy Bryant of Sydney. Charlotte was also convicted on 27 August 1829 and sentenced to 4 years. Her description this time was given as Height: 4 foot 10 inches, Complexion: fair, oval face, sandy hair, grey eyes, scar on the wrist of right hand, born in Kingston occupation servant, last place of abode: Bishops Hull, Taunton ( She was single and could read. Charlotte was 29 years of age and on a Bond of 6 years when she married Samuel Merritt, a free man, and he was 32 years of age.Charlotte made her mark on the Marriage Certificate so probably couldn’t write. In 1835 Charlotte, aged 32 and another convict Thomas Jacobs, aged 39, who was transported for life on the “Ocean” applied to marry, both stating they were single. The ceremony was carried out by the Rev Samuel Marsden in Parramatta perhaps on 16th May. One of the witnesses was Margaret Partridge (nee Stafford) who was on the same Roslin Castle voyage as Charlotte. On 28 December 1838 Charlotte was granted a ticket of leave No: 38?/2112. Her master at the time and since was Mr Ferguson. No place stated. Charlotte died in Bungonia, a small town south east of Goulburn in 1939.
