National Archives. ADM 101/67/2/1 Diary of the convict ship Shipley for 19 November 1816 to 3 May 1817 by George Clayton, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in carrying convicts, soldiers and passengers from England to New South Wales. Folio 6: 23 December 1816: This day 26 convicts were found with their irons hammered in such a manner that in many instances they could slip them over their heels. They were chained together in pairs and all the prisoners were advertised that the first found offending in the same way would be severely punished. Folio 7: 25 December 1816: John [Pasilan?] punished with 24 lashes for having one of the rivets out of his irons. Folio 7: 28 December 1816: The 26 men chained in pairs on the 23rd instant were separated today.
