National Archives. HO 18/20/36 Prisoner name: Andrew Passmore, aged 18. Court and Date of Trial: Middlesex Sessions, Clerkenwell, April 1840. Crime: Larceny of a horse cloth, value three shillings, the property of Messrs Nedby & Lounds of 15 Southampton Buildings, Middlesex, together with John Porter. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's Report: Three times before in prison. Outcome: Nil. Petitions and letters: Petition from Andrew Passmore, the prisoner's father, pleading youth, accomplice received two months imprisonment, and ill health (incurable complaint), undersigned by seven inhabitants of St Luke, Chelsea.




Andrew PASSMORE was convicted at Middlesex, London on 7 April 1840 for stealing a horse cloth from the Admiral Cockington Public House .Previous convictions, including stealing from his parents. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Marquis of Hastings' arriving there 8 Nov 1842. Aged 20 yrs; single man; bricklayer's labourer; 5'6 1/2" height; Protestant; not literate; fresh complexion; brown hair; blue eyes; some scars, rings on fingers, tatoos. Native place of birth: Brampton (or Brompton), England. Mother: Mary Brother: John (ref. for above inf., as recorded upon arrival, in convict records.) Colony of VDL: 6 mths Probation Period Station Gang: Brown's River Clear conduct record apart from one note of insolence. 1843: at Richmond 1843: at James Murdoch, Kangaroo Point. 19 May 1846: Ticket of Leave status granted. 18 June 1847: Free Certificate issued. 18 June 1863: at Hobart - Idle & disorderly. 14 days prison. DEATH: 11 Aug 1889 Andrew PASSMORE (indexed as "PASTMORE"), aged 74 yrs, labourer, cause - paralysis. Notified by friend James Holloway. District of Esperence (south of Hobart), Tasmania.
