Convict Notes
On the morning of the 23rd of February, about o’clock, a party of men from Ardnaree, about thirteen in number, attacked the house of a man named Keoghy, who is employed as a barger to protect the salmon in the river Risky, and robbed him of a gun, a bayonet, some money, and wearing apparel, beating ,Keoghy and his son, a boy of 15 or 16 years of age, most cruelly. Keoghy lately had his left arm amputated, therefore was less able to defend himself. The same party then proceeded on to Edward Larinan's, near Comcul-bridge, where the Sligo and Balina mail-coach changes horses; and in attempting to force their way in at the windows, were most spiritedly, intrepidly, and effectually resisted and repulsed by Larinan, with no other assistance but his wife supplying him with ammunition. -Although he had two servant-men in the house, and two houses contiguous inhabited, no person came to his aid. Larinan defended the three windows of his house in succession, having shot the three men who attempted to force them in ; one of whom was left behind by his party, taken prisoner by Larinan and has since died of the wound he received. There is very good reason to believe that another was carried away dead, and a third either since dead or somewhere concealed badly wounded. Several persons are missing from Ardnaree and its neighbourhood. Albion and the Star, 9 March 1831. SLIGO ASSIZES. John Mullinan, Michael Farrell, Edward Farrell, Edward M'Nulty, Patrick Reddington, Pat. Hagarty, and Philip Lakin were indicted for breaking open and entering the house of Thos. Flynn, and taking thereout a scythe; and also for administering an unlawful oath to the said Thomas Flynn. They were also charged with assaulting the dwelling of Martin Keoughy; and also for breaking into the house of Edward Larinan, with intent to kill and murder him.
