VDL Conduct Record states his crime as 'Housebreaking and Larceny" and his occupation was a 'Musician'. Patrick/Frederick Katen was tried on 11/4/1840 and arrived at Norfolk Island 1/6/1841 - Arrived VDL 3/3/1844. **No reference to him being Patrick on VDL records. Frederick was then described as 33 years old, 5'11" tall, fresh complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, hazel eyes, single. Remarks: Has been a Soldier, scar on left leg, bleeding mark on right arm, burn mark on left arm, slight pockpitted. 10/5/1844: Was a Constable at Launceston - Drunk. 28/8/1844: Was a Constable at Hobart - Drunk. 22/2/1845: Was a Constable at Port Arthur - Drunk. 11/4/1847: CP 15/4/1847: COF 10/12/1852 Sydney Morning Herald: OBSCENE AND INSULTING LANGUAGE. - Frederick Katen, Ann Smith, Joseph Horne, and John Byrnes, were each severally convicted, yesterday, under the Vagrant Act, of having used obscene and insulting language in the public street, and sentenced to pay 20s. penalties, with the usual alternative of l4 days imprisonment.

Was sent to Norfolk Island originally but later transferred to Van Diemens Land on board the "Maitland". He was now called Frederick. He gained his Certificate of Freedom on 13 April 1847. He said he had a father Patrick and a brother Thomas in Birr, Kings Co. Ireland.
