Stealing Money. - Before Messrs. F. O. Darvall and F. Oakes, on the 27th instant, Eliza M'Ctnn was charged with having robbed an old man named Patrick Pillion, of Pennant Hills on the 26th instant, of a £5 note, a £1 note, and nearly £1 in silver. It appeared that the parties had been drinking in Scully's public-house in Parramatta, and that the woman asked Pillion to give her a lift on his dray out to Pennant Hills; he agreed, and after he had gone about a mile on the road, Eliza M'Cann knocked old Pillion (who was pretty drunk) down on his dray, and took his money from his pocket and bolted into the bush on the road side with it. John Thomas Neale declared to having paid Pillion £5 note and a £1 note on the same day for hay; could not remember the number of the notes, but thought they were of the Commercial Bank. Thomas Barker stated that he passed the man and woman in a dray about half-post four o'clock on the afternoon of the 26th instant, on the Pennant Hills Road; sure they were the same people; after he had passed them about one hundred and fifty yards, heard the man call out ; he was down in the dray, and the woman appeared to be searching him ; she ran into the bush at the side of the road ; he did not return back. Samuel Hill declared, I saw a man and woman in a dray yesterday on the Pennant Hills Road ; these are the parties ; I heard the man scream ; I ran back; the dray was about two hundred yards from me; the woman was gone, and the man had his arm between the dray and wheel, and his head nearly between the spokes ; the horses had just began to move, and if I had not got back in time the old man would have been killed; he said the woman had just robbed him of nearly £7. Margaret Boyd declared to the prisoner having asked her to get a £5-note changed ; she went to Lackey's public-house, near the Windsor toll-bar, for that purpose. Mrs. Lackey stated that the last witness and the prisoner had come into her house on the evening of the 26th instant ; Mrs. Boyd offered a £5-note for change ; she had not change, and they went away; this case was very clearly brought out ; Sydney Morning Herald, 3 May 1858. Eliza M'Cann was indicted with having robbed, near Parramatta, an old man called Patrick Pillion, of £7. This case has already been reported at length in your newspaper. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three years in Parramatta gaol, with hard labour. Sydney Morning Herald, 20 May 1858. --------------------------------------------------------------------- PARRAMATTA. INQUEST. An inquest was held on Saturday, the 1st day of June, by C. B. Lyons, Esq., coroner, at Mr. King's public house, Dural, on the body of, an old man, named Patrick Pillion, who was found dead upon the road, lying on a bag of corn. The deceased, it appeared, was returning home, and must have been pitched out of the cart, which had gone on without him. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. NOTICE is hereby given, that after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication of this notice, Mary Pillion, the widow of the said Patrick Pillion, will apply to this Honorable Court, that Administration of the goods, chattels, and effects of her said late husband, may be granted to her.—Dated this 13th day of June, a.d. 1861.
