John Paul was born about 1799 (his age at sentencing corroborates this). He was baptised in St Edmund Church, Costessy, Norfolk on 7 July 1799.

John Paul was 35 years old when convicted of poaching a Costessey in 1835. He was the brother of James Paul (Strathfieldsay 1836 to NSW). 1/5/1820: Married Mary Drake, they had 1 child. John was the son of Thomas Paul and Mary Bailey. 31/3/1832: TOL 30/8/1842: Misconduct TOL revoked. 30/8/1844: Recommended to the ueen for a conditional pardon. 5/7/1849: Free Certificate. Unsuccesful attempts were made by influential persons to get the PAUL brothers sentence of transportation commuted. 12/5/1874: Died in Hobart aged 70 - I add this date of death because the obituary said he was a native of Norwich, and all the other John Paul's in VDL came from other places.
