William PEELER was convicted at Lancaster on 21 Jan 1828 for larceny. Previous convictions and "bad" gaol report. Hulk report: "good". 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship "Woodford" 1828. Stated his father was Robert Peeler, a shoemaker at Manchester. He had last worked for a Mr. Gray, Collett St., a cotton card stripper. Single man. Colony of VDL: assigned to work duties 1831: Riotious conduct in his Master Mr. Wilson's house. Punishment - 10 days on the Tread Mill. 1831: Drunk. Reprimanded. 1831: Drunk. 14 days on the Tread Mill. 1835: Ticket of Leave granted. 1837: at Campbell Town & Bothwell. 1838: Having a pig in his possession and not being able to account for same. 10 days on Tread Mill. 19 Oct 1838: Conditional Pardon approved, no. 1867 APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 12 Dec 1838 - Mary BENTLEY (per Atwick) to William PEELER (per Woodford) MARRIAGE: 14 May 1839 - Mary BENTLEY, convict per Atwick, aged 23 yrs to William PEELER, Ticket of Leave status, per Woodford, aged 29 yrs - at St. David’s Church of England, Hobart. William Peeler arrived on the Woodford on 25th August, 1828 in Van Diemens Land. He married Mary Bentley, also a convict, at Hobart Town on 14th May, 1839 at St. David's Church. They had seven children - Charles 1839-1840, Ellen 1840-1925, William 1843 - 1928, Thomas 1845 - 1883, Jane 1847 - 1928, John 1852 - 1905, and Esther 1855 - 1856. They moved with their first four children to Victoria in 1851, settling at Barkers Creek in the Castlemaine area after a short time where they lived the rest of their lives.
