Old Bailey Proceedings Online (www.oldbaileyonline.org, version 8.0, 01 February 2023), October 1821, trial of ISAAC PENN (t18211024-14). ISAAC PENN, Theft > pocketpicking, 24th October 1821. 1287. ISAAC PENN was indicted for stealing, on the 22d of September , one seal, value 12 s.; one ring, value 4 s., and one key, value 8 s., the goods of William Wadsworth , from his person . WILLIAM WADSWORTH . I am a seamen . On the 22d of September, I was at the bottom of Gold's-hill, Shadwell , looking at the mountebanks - my watch ribbon was cut, and the seals and key taken; I felt a pull at my watch, I had a child in my arms - the prisoner stood close to me; I caught hold of him, and saw the seal and key in his hand, he threw them down, and afterwards shewed me where they were - I picked them up. I am sure he took them. WILLIAM DOE . I saw the prisoner throw the seal and key down when the prosecutor seized him, I stood just by him - I saw them in his hand as well. - WHITE. I am an officer. I took charge of him. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. It is all false. GUILTY . Aged 16. Transported for Life . Second Middlesex Jury, before W. Grounds for clemency: Youth; first offence; aged parents who are extremely poor have a family of 14 children to support; asks for sentence to be reduced so that he might return to his family; the convict's uncle fought in British North America.
