Convict Notes
Daniel's Father. Daniel's father was convicted in Hampshire in 1824, under the name of John Sanderson. Details, as recorded in the newspapers, are below. --------------------------------------------------- John Sanderson, who was found guilty at Winchester Assizes, of uttering a bill for 49£. 7s. on 8th Sept, last, purporting to be drawn by Jos. Armitage, on Smith, Payne, and Smith, bankers, London, but which proved to be false and fraudulent, was 19 years clerk in the bankinghouse of Jones and Co. Lothbury. His real name is Pennington, and the father of Daniel Pennington, whose unfortunate case excited much commiseration in Gloucester. It appears that this hoary sinner committed the crime, the penalties of which he must now abide, at the moment when his unhappy son was about to undergo perpetual banishment from his native land, for similar offence, perpetrated at his instigation, and for his exclusive benefit! Staffordshire Advertiser, 27 March 1824. -------------------------------------------------- Thomas Cant, John Sanderson, William Burnett, Charles Breaker, Daniel Breaker, and William Blandford, six of the respited convicts in our gaol, made a daring attempt at escape last night, and had succeeded in getting into the court yard, where they formed their bedding into a ladder, but were foiled attempting to scale the wall. They are now securely placed in irons. Hampshire Chronicle, 10 May 1824. ---------------------------------------------------- Wm. Burnett, John Sanderson, Wm. Blandford, Chas. & Daniel Breaker, Wm. Taylor, P. Coombs, Jas. Godden, and Thos. Cane, who had sentence of death recorded against them, have received their final sentence, and were removed from our gaol, and put board the Leviathan hulk, in Portsmouth harbour today.
