The Royal Admiral was built at Lynn in 1828. Convicts were transported to New South Wales on the Royal Admiral in 1830, 1833, 1835 and to Van Diemen's Land in 1842. 1833 - Ship; Royal Admiral. Commenced fitting as a Convict Transport at Deptford on the 29 March. Surgeon Superintendent [Andrew Henderson] joined on the 3rd April. Guard embarked on the 13th. Sailed on the 17th and anchored in Kingston Barbour near Dublin on the 9th May. 220 convicts embarked on the 16 May 1833 and the ship sailed from Dublin Bay for Sydney on the 4th June and arrived there on the 20 October. Originally embarked with 221 convicts, 5 Died at sea, 1 was Relanded. 11 sick on shore, The convicts were described as 220 such wretchedly debilitated creatures ... He was tried at Bristol Assizes on 4 4 1798, sentenced to 14years, held at Bristol Gaol Delivery Gloucestershire, & arrived in NSW as a convict on 20 11 1800 after a voyage of 8months on ROYAL ADMIRAL. He was Free by Servitude by 1807 & married Elizabeth (Robinson) on 1 3 1807 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. On 28 12 1810 he was appointed as a District Constable from which he resigned on 15 2 1812. He was issued his Certificate of Freedom on 5 9 1812. He was working as a baker in 1825. He died in 1840/1860 age55/81. She was tried at Aberdeen Circuit Court of Justiciary, sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 4 1806 after a voyage of 9months on WILLIAM PITT. [Noted an Elizabeth (Robinson/Fearn), tried Liverpool Lancaster-7years, was also aboard this ship] She died on 5 11 1827 age51 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He died in 1862 age about53. 3.Mary (Phelps) was born on 7 9 1809 & baptised on 7 1 1810 w/George at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She married James (Gannon) carpenter on 3 3 1829 at St Phillips CofE Sydney & produced 3children. She died in 1884 age about74. ..James (Gannon) was born in 1801 possibly at Mullingar co.Westmeath & became a carpenter. He was tried for possession of forged banknote at Meath co. Ireland on 11 3 1820, sentenced to 14years, held at Kainmainham Gaol Dublin & arrived in NSW as a convict on 22 12 1820 after a voyage of 4months on ALMORAH; he was 5'4.5" fair md complexion brown hair dark eyes. He was issued his Ticket of Leave in 1828. He was a carpenter in 1829. He became an inn keeper & was involved in sporting activities (pigeon shooting). He became insolvent in 1843 creating difficulties for his brother Michael. He was involved in politics in 1865 until fined for 'vote rigging'. He died in 1851 age about40. 5?.Noted a Ruth (Phelps) is also recorded as born in 1800s-no parents given & may not be of this family. She married James (Lutwicke/Ledwidge) on 23 6 1817 at St Lukes CofE Liverpool. She is recorded in February 1823 at Airds with her assigned husband. ..James (Ledwich/k/Lutwicke/Ledwidge/wich/wk) was born about 1796 probably in Meath Ireland & became a labourer. He was tried at Meath co. Ireland, sentenced to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 8 4 1816 after a voyage of 4months on GUILDFORD; he was sent to Liverpool for distribution on 15 4 1816. He was issued his Ticket of Leave (perhaps no.26 145 for Sydney) in February 1823 and assigned as servant to his wife. He was issued further Tickets of Leave-nos.27/27 for Sydney, 31/138 for Patricks Plains & 34/371 for Bong Bong; & his Conditional Pardon no.44/170 on 1 5 1843. ..[Some details taken from this Website] .. 6.William (Phelps) was born on 6 5 1813 & baptised on 6 6 1813 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He died on 3 8 1813 age3-m & was buried at St Phillips CofE Sydney. 7.Hannah (Phelps) was born in 1815. She married at age15 William George (Barker) clerk on 9 8 1830 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She died in 1835 age about20. ..William George (Barker) was born about 1806 (maybe overseas). He arrived in Australia as a convict in 1822 on LADY ROWENA. GD, 4 April 1798, Sentence, NSW 14 years. -------------------------------------------------------------- At Bristol assizes, Charles Brer? aged 20, for stealing a mare; Richard Phelps, aged 18, for burglary; and Nathaniel Clutterbuck, aged 34, for forging an indorsement on a bill of exchange for 49£. Richard Phelps was born about 1785. He was convicted of burglary at the Briston Assizes on the 4 April 1798. He was sentenced to 14 years. He was transported to NSW on the Royal Admiral. The ship left England on the 23 May 1800. It arrived in NSW on the 20 November 1800. On the 28 December 1810 he was appointed as a District Constable under Governor Macquarie's police reforms. He resigned as District Constable on the 15 February 1812. He married Elizabeth Robinson in 1807 in Sydney. Their children were Henry (1806), George (18070, Mary (1809), Robert (1810), William (1813) and Hannah (1814). His sentence expired on the 4 April 1812 and he was issued with a Certificate of Freedom on the 5 September 1812. He was working as a baker in 1825. He died in either 1840 or 1860.
