Place of origin: Preston, Lancashire Status; Married Age; 22 years Offence; Stealing a carpet bag containing wearing apparel. [property of Sir W Summerfield Previously convicted 7 times for similar offences 1848 - Free Certificate - 29 December 1848 1850 - Asylum - Patients Admitted. Saltwater River Insane Asylum: Edward Phillips. Age; 26 years old per Ship; Triton Original Admission - 13 November 1847. Admitted 30 January 1850 to Impression Bay. Date; 22 August 1850. Aged 26 years. ** As per register Disease on Admission; Mania with hallucinations chiefly referring to his position in life. is sometimes troublesome and not particularly animable to discipline. Will throw away his food saying it is not of a proper quality. Is very unwilling to work, but general health is good. 1857 - 1877. Port Arthur Insane Asylum: 1890 - 12 July 1890. Removed to the Hospital for the Insane New Norfolk. 1905 - 6 December. Died. New Norfolk Hospital




Edward & his brother were convicted of stealing a carpet bag, containing wearing apparel, from James Curtis Somerville on 3 November 1841. William Ferris was also an accomplice. The trial minutes list the items stolen & they were sentenced on 30 December 1841 to 7 years transportation.
