On 6 January 1817, the Star newspaper in London reports on Page 4: Guildhall.—Saturday, Francis Phillips, a notorious thief, was fully committed for trial, charged with stealing form the shop of Mr. Lane, of Fleet-street, 90 yards of printed cotton, valued from £4 to £5.— The prisoner was but a few days since discharged from imprisonment, to which he had been adjudged for a similar offence. On 26 January 1817, the Windsor and Eton Express newspaper’s Old Bailey report says: Wednesday evening, at a late hour, the Recorder proceeded to pass the awful sentence of Death upon the several persons capitally convicted during the sessions ; viz.—… John Cashman, Francis Phillips, and Harriet Slee, for stealing in a dwelling-house. On 11 March 1817, London’s Commercial Chronicle newspaper Recorder’s Report on Page 2 listed Francis Phillips among those respited from execution by the Prince Regent.
