Committed to our county gaol, Sampson Phillips and John Phillips, charged with having stolen a ewe sheep, the property of Messrs. John and William Salt, of Upper Elkstone. Staffordshire Advertiser, 23 Feb 1805. Assize Intelligence. Sampson Phillips, aged 56, and John Phillips, his son, aged 26, for sheep stealing. Staffordshire Advertiser, 30 March, 1805. ------------------------------------------------------ Portsmouth Hulk records. HO 9-8_2. Received 10 prisoners from Staffordshire, 2 July 1805 Sampson Phillips, age 56, CR, Tried at Stafford, 27 March 1805. Sentence, NSW Life. Fortune. John Phillips, age 26, CR, Tried at Stafford, 27 March 1805. Sentence, NSW Life. To Royal Af. Corps. -------------------------------------------------- Sampson's son, John Phillips, was sent with him to the hulk, but instead of being transported he joined the Royal Africa Corps, as did a lot of the other prisoners on the hulks.
