Thomas was baptised on 30th June 1800 at St Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire. He was the son of William Phillips and his wife Sarah (nèe Ridley) who had married at St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire on 9th November 1794. His mother died before his 5th birthday and his father subsequently married again to Sophia Yates, 30th December 1808, once again at St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Eleven years later, 7th August 1819, both his father and step-mother were convicted at Warwick Assizes for coining offences - they were in possession of forged banknotes. They were each sentenced to transportation for 14 years, the father being transported on "Coromandel" with arrived in NSW 4th April 1820 and his mother was transported on "Janus" which arrived 3rd May 1820. His 5 step-siblings, also went, with their mother on "Janus". On 27th March 1820, Thomas was also tried at Warwickshire and sentenced to 7 years. He was transported on "Dick" which arrived in the colony 12th March 1821.
