John Pickering was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 19th Nov 1832 and arriving 9th Mar 1833 with 216 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Old Bailey: JOHN PICKERING, Theft > simple larceny, 5th April 1832. Reference Number: t18320405-287 Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation NEW COURT. THURSDAY, APRIL 12. Fourth Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Common Sergeant. JOHN PICKERING was indicted for stealing, on the 14th of March, 1 plane, value 2s., the goods of John Griffith; to which he pleaded GUILTY. Aged 22. - Transported for Seven Years. Birth dates of 1808, 1809, 1810, and 1813 found. John was listed as 22 years old on arrival, he was 5’4 ½” tall, dark complexion, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, slightly pock pitted, single. 1833-35 Musters: Assigned to Mr. J. C. Franke. 13/4/1844: Married Ann Watchorn aged 17 - Ann Watchorn had immigrated to Tasmania aged 8 with her father Thomas and brothers and sisters in 1837. John and Ann had 2 children, Mathew b 25/1/1848 and Emily b 28/12/1853 – died Wellington NZ 1898. 13/4/1849: Certificate. 1881: John Pickering died in Wellington, New Zealand - BDM registration lists him as 73 years old.
