LICENSING MEETING. A special meeting of the justices of Goulburn and the vicinity assembled at the police office yesterday, for the purpose of taking into consideration the applications for publican's licenses and transfers of the same, that might be submitted to them. Those present were Captains Hovell and Edinborough, Lieut. Montgomerie, and Messrs. Rossi, jun. Hedge, Chisholm and Chatfield. Their worships, as usual, conducted their proceedings with closed doors, and when they had finished their deliberations the following was the result :- …. LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHAPEL.—Yesterday (Sunday) being the day appointed for laying the foundation stone of the Roman Catholic Chapel and School.house, our little village presented a very lively appearance. The weather being fine induced many to come a distance of several miles to witness the ceremony. The foundation being marked out on Saturday, and every thing got ready, early on Sunday both equestrians and pedestrians began to flock into the village. By eleven o'clock a large concourse of people were assembled; and, after the celebration of Mass, at Mr. Poidevin's Inn, by the Rev. Mr. Walsh, of Goulburn, the procession moved towards the Chapel ground. DIED, On the 27th instant, at his residence, Collector, Lake George, PETER POIDEVIN, Innkeeper, aged 61 years after a short but painful illness, which he bore with christian fortitude, leaving a widow and seven children to lament their loss. The Australian Convict Indentures state that Pierre Poidevan was aged 33 years old. He could read and write; Religion Roman Catholic; Statues Single and native of France. He was convicted of making base coin at Guernsey Royal Court on 3 December 1834 and sentenced to seven years. Francois Noyan was tried the same day for the same offence. Pierre had no prior offences. Physical attributes Height 5 feet 4 inches; complexion very dark sallow; hair dark brown and greenish eyes. Prisoner number 35-2228 and transport number 225.
