National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/94/35 Date: 1831 Apr -1834 May . Prisoner name: Mark Pilch. Prisoner age: 51. Prisoner occupation: Inn keeper at 'The Halbert Inn' Ipswich [Suffolk]. Court and date of trial: Suffolk Lent Assizes, Bury St Edmunds, March 1831. Crime: Receiving stolen goods, four coombs of malt, property of Charles Calver of Tuddenham [Suffolk]. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's report: Character indifferent. Annotated: In Van Diemens Land. Nil. Petitioner(s): Mary Pilch (prisoner's wife) undersigned by 65 people from Ipswich [Suffolk] including 11 clergymen; three petitions from Frederick Pilch (prisoner's son). Grounds for clemency: Would not survive transportation because of poor health and infirmities; previous good character; former soldier; Frederick Pilch begs for father to be allowed to transport himself at friends' expense to lessen distress; Frederick Pilch offers to serve in army or navy if request granted. The son's petition of 1834 states that the convict is in hospital in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land having lost use of his limbs. Other papers: Covering letters with the petitions from Mr Harvey and Sir Herbert Taylor.

Mark Pilch was indicted for receiving stolen goods - 20 coombs of malt and a pocket of hops, the property of Mr. Charles Calver, of Tuddenham, Suffolk, well knowing them to have been stolen. The newspaper report on Mark Pilch's case being heard at the Lent Assizes, Bury St. Edmunds can be found in the Suffolk Chronicle – Saturday, 26th March 1831 Mark's son Frederick Pilch was elected a Councillor for Ipswich Town Council: www.ipswichluminary.co.uk/town-servants/frederick-pilch/
