FRANCIS PIPER and EDWARD PIPER were indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 17th of November, eight hundred pounds weight of flax, value 35l. the property of Hugh Atkins. (## There is then a long and quite involved case about the two brothers stealing a huge amount of flax from a lighter as it came ashore from the ship Minerva. This transcript is well worth the read - Old Bailey, online database.) The prisoners did not say any thing in their defence, but called five witnesses, who gave them a good character. Francis Piper, GUILTY , aged 30. Edward Piper , GUILTY , aged 35. Transported for seven years . Second Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Justice Grose.
I am a direct descendant of Francis and Edward Piper. They were two brothers convicted of stealing flax from a ship moored in the Thames River. The daughter of Francis was Dulcibella Piper who married Gregory Board also the son of convicts. They later became wealthy landowners who owned much of Market Street in Sydney.
