John Matthew Pitman was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 31st Dec 1813 and arriving 28th Jul 1814 with 204 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

He was tried for stealing a mare of James (Snook) at Somerset Assizes on 21 8 1813, sentenced to be hung reprieved to Life, held on hulk BRIDGWATER from 29 10 1813 & arrived in NSW on 28 7 1814 after a voyage of 6months on SURREY/SURRY; he was Protestant. He was assigned to William (Cox) at Windsor/Richmond & became a labourer. He was Free by Servitude by 1822 & had his Ticket of Leave by 1824. He married Mary (Sunderland age14) on 12 4 1824 at Christ Church Castlereagh. He was living at North Richmond in 1828 on 40acres & recorded as farming in 1827 & 1829. He died in 1863 age74 & was buried on 7 8 1863 at St Peters CofE Richmond Hawkesbury. She died on 11 11 1846 age21. 2.Henry (Pittman) was born on 7 7 1827 at North Richmond & baptised on 22 7 1827 at St Peters CofE Richmond. He died on 9 11 1916 age89. 3.John (Pittman) was born on 16 6 1829 at North Richmond & baptised on 19 7 1829 at St Peters CofE Richmond. John Pitman was sentenced to be hung & reprieved to transoration for life. He was assigned to William Cox in the Windsor/Richmond area. John married Mary Sunderland in 1824 and they had 10 children: Hannah, Henry, John, Thomas, George, James, Frances, Mary, William & Charles John died in 1863 & is buried in St Peter's Anglican Cemetery, Richmond. There is a Pittman Road running off the Bell's Line Road in the Kurrajong area.
