Convict Notes

John married his 3rd wife, Mary Boylen in 1859 at Parramatta. NSW BDM Registration No: 2666/1859

John Pogson was born in Rushworth, Yorkshire. 10/11/1817: Married Sarah Holdsworth at Almondbury, Yorkshire - They had 2 sons, Henry born 1818-1903 and William born 1819-1860, they were left behind in England. John was transported for 'Burglary' - he was 5'5" tall, pale complexion, brown hair, grey eyes and 27 years old. 1823: John was considered to be capable of maintaining a family in the colony, so he sent for Sarah and his two sons. Sarah had apparently died and the boys stayed in England. Son Henry came with his family in 1859 and William and his family came in 1860 (seems William also died in 1860). 9/5/1825: Married Mary Ann Howarth (1809-16/11/1856) - came free aboard the ship Maria with her convict mother Mary Howarth. They seemed to have had no children. 1828 Census: John Pogson with his wife Mary as having 45 acres of land at Baulkham Hills. 30 acres were cleared, 22 classified as running 1 horse and 13 cattle and was cultivated. He was a 'government servant'. The 45 acres was purchased and was part of the Halfpenny grant in t e area of New Line and Gumnut Roads, and later he bought further land along Gumnut Road, and on Purchase Road (including Powell's grant and portions of McAloney's). Pogson, Mary, 19, came free, Maria, 1817, Protestant. 1837: TOL 1841: CP 1851: John had bought more land and had become a Fruit Grower and seller. 16/11/1856: Wife Mary Howarth died, aged 47. **Don't know how this works** - On the NSW BDM John married Mary Boylen (1817-1879) in 1855. John was 61. 10/11/1867: John died aged 73, he was buried with Mary Ann Howarth. Mary Boylen died 1879 and was buried at Parramatta.

John Pogson is buried with his 2nd wife, Mary Ann Pogson (Nee Howarth) at Cherrybrook Uniting Church Cemetery, 134 New Line Road, Cherrybrook, New South Wales, Australia.
