Old Bailey Proceedings Samuel Poole,Theft from a specified place 14th September 1785 805.Samuel Poole was indicted for feloniously stealing,on the 25th day of August last,40Ib.weight of lead,value 2s.belonging to Joseph Braine,and then and there affixed to a certain building of his,against the statute. James Croxham,sworn Between eight and nine the 25th of August.I was on watch.I thought I heard somebody at the bottom of the ladder.I saw the prisoner with the lead under his arm.It was dark,I could not see him before I took him at the foot of the ladder,says I,what have you here,says he,a bit of something I am going to lay down Thomas Braine sworn This was our lead,it was tore off entirely. Prisoner I picked it up at the foot of the ladder. GUILTY Transported for Seven Years. Tried by the first Middlesex Jury before Mr.Baron.Hotham
